Fill in the Blanks

I am horribly late with this post this week.  I am horribly behind on everything this week, truth be told.  It has not been one of my favorite weeks.  I am allergic to shedding animals you see, but it had been under control for years until I recently had a full blown attack, complete with swollen eyes and hives and itchies.  My only relief comes from Benadryl, which induces a coma like sleep.  Not very productive!  I am seeing my doctor again on Monday however, and I hope to leave with a plan to get this managed.

In the meantime, let's fill in some blanks!

1.   I am looking forward to       Spring and Summer activities! The Virginia Gold Cup is next Saturday, which always serves to kick off the Summer season for me.  The Masters is making a stop in DC this year, and Baltimore is hosting a Grand Prix. The Kennedy Center has a fabulous Summer lineup, as do our favorite concert venues. We also have two long weekend trips coming up in July; one to visit my family in Pennsylvania and one to visit my friends in New York. I am excited about all of it!

2.  Something kind of embarrassing that I still love anyway is    my doll collection! I love to change their outfits and brush their hair .

3.  My favorite car is     the Ford Thunderbird convertible, or any vintage convertible in mint condition  .

4.  If I could pick one type of weather to live with for the rest of my life it would be    Warm, sunny spring days with low humidity.

5.  My favorite thing to do after a bad/stressful day is      Yoga. It helps me to let it all go and get centered again.  A nice glass of wine does the trick, too!

6.  This weekend       We had plans for a lovely evening out in Little Italy with some lovely people, but the allergy debacle has caused us to have to reschedule. I am hopeful for a productive Sunday, though.  I would like to do some baking and share the results and recipe with all of you. Here's hoping!  .

7.  If I were a color, I'd be       orange      because,        it's my favorite! I think it is just so happy and bright and cheery.

The Week In Pictures

I am happy to report that I have managed to capture another week in pictures!  3 down, 49 to go, for those who are counting.  Not me of course, but someone might be!

Bob and I are also keeping up with our 5 Year Journals, which I am very happy about as well.  Some day, a VERY long time from now, after those we leave behind have divided and dispersed of all of our worldly goods, perhaps someone will sit down with those journals and these pictures and get to know us a bit.  As I look at the beautiful things left to me by family that is gone, I wish that I had more than photos taken at celebrations to tell the story of who they were.  I would love to read a journal written by my Nana!

Before I get too sentimental, I best move on to the pictures!

Day 15 ~ Tuesday, April 19

Vintage star on the side of my house.

Day 16 ~ Wednesday, April 20

Pretty flowers in the grass.

Blog Give Aways!

'Sew Vintage, So Fun!' is taking part in not one but two blog give aways this week!  Both of them focus on living green and include books on the subject as well as reusable, fold-able bags perfect for bringing store purchases home in.  I love to say no to those horrible plastic shopping bags at the grocery store!

A Beautiful Day

It was a lovely Easter Sunday in our world.  We spent the morning at home, then ventured out to church, followed by an afternoon near the water in Annapolis.

How did you spend your Sunday?  I hope that it was just beautiful!

Fill In The Blanks ~ Good Friday

1.   Fridays are       meant for wrapping up the week and getting ready for the weekend, followed by pizza and a cocktail with the Mister while watching a show or two from the DVR that we didn't get to during the week  .

2.    Sunshine, random acts of kindness, puppies and hand holding    make me terribly happy.

3.  Something that inspires me is      all of the incredibly talented people I have 'met' since I began blogging at the beginning of this year. Seeing so many people successful at being self employed and living their dreams reminds me that it is possible, and keeps me from getting discouraged  .

4.  If I had the day off today I would     spend it making something from scratch. The best days for me are the ones where I can create something. I have ideas for mixed media art pieces, clothing designs and needlework projects all stored up in my head just waiting for a block of time to turn supplies from my massive stash into actual creations. Learning how to build more 'time off' into my schedule is high on my list of priorities!

5.  If I had to put a label on my home decor style, I would say my style is    organic. My aesthetic for my home and for life in general are very similar to what the Arts and Crafts movement was founded on a century ago. I favor clean lines and quality of materials over excessive ornamentation, and find myself drawn to things that are both useful and visually appealing. I prefer hand crafted to mass produced whenever possible. My home is an eclectic arrangement of the things that my mister and I use in our daily life and have collected over time, and everything in it makes us smile!   .

6.  Concerning politics I would say I'm       a registered Democrat, true to my upbringing. But I believe that a party affiliation should be the starting point for a personal philosophy, not the definition of it     .

7.  I'd like to go to       St. John, US VI      so I could       lay by the pool, walk on the beach, drink awesome cocktails and eat delicious food prepared for me and served to me by hands other than my own! All while soaking up the sun and recharging my energies  .

It's a holiday here in our world; one of those rare weekdays that my Mister doesn't have to go to the office.  We had planned to visit family out of town, but a particularly bad allergy flare up has made it necessary for me to avoid all triggers, especially dogs and cats that shed.  So we find ourselves at home with no plans!  I see some Easter weekend church services followed by dining out in some very lovely restaurants in our immediate future.  Yay!

Some Good Friday thoughts I find inspiring:

"We may say that on the first Good Friday afternoon was completed that great act by which light conquered darkness and goodness conquered sin. That is the wonder of our Saviour's crucifixion."- Phillips Brooks

"The cross was two pieces of dead wood; and a helpless, unresisting Man was nailed to it; yet it was mightier than the world, and triumphed, and will ever triumph over it."- Augustus William Hare

"God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son."- John 3:16

Inspiring Books

Where do you find your inspiration?  I find so much of it here on the internet, especially from fellow bloggers.  Go to any of the blogs in the "People I Read" list, and you'll see what I mean!

But there are times that I just love to curl up with a good book.  The books pictured here are at the top of my reading pile, and each one of them is packed with inspiration to fuel your creativity.

All of the women written about and photographed in this book are among the most amazing and creative women in the handcrafted community.  To get a look at the spaces where they make that happen is incredibly inspiring!

As I have often mentioned in my posts, I am constantly looking for ways to improve my photography.  I am finding them on every page of this great book!

I don't think I can adequately describe how inspiring this book has been to me, and I have barely scratched the surface!  Everything you need to know about creating your own blog and filling it with meaningful content can be found both on these pages, and on the blogs of the artists and creatives covered in it. Every time I pick it up I find it harder to put down!

Sometimes the only way that I can feel creative and inspired is to pick up a pair of scissors and a needle and thread and just make something.  This treasure of a book is packed with patterns and instructions to make some of the most awesome items from felt that I have ever seen.  This book just arrived yesterday, and I am ready to dive right in!

I should mention that this is NOT a for profit blog.  I devote a lot of time in my quest to live a creative, fun and inspiring life that honors and helps to preserve our planet.  The things that I share here are items that I have come across on that journey that I feel may inspire my readers.  It is my sincere hope that they too may benefit from my efforts.

Storm Sky

It's been a stormy spring day here in the Mid Atlantic.   Thunderstorms and rain showers on and off all day, with predictions of heavy rain and strong winds overnight.  The flashlights are bed side in anticipation of the inevitable power outages.

Late in the day the sky was the most amazing color of blue that seemed to turn everything else blue, too.  I grabbed my camera and went outside so that I could share it with you.

Happy weekend, friends!  I'm wishing you calm skies.

A Special Fill In The Blank Friday

Today is the first day of the rest of your life!
Perhaps a bit trite, but true.  Happy Friday, friends!
This Fill In The Blanks is special to me because I guest wrote the questions!  It was fun, and also afforded me a look into what Lauren has undertaken.  I am not sure that I could do this every week and remain as fresh and original as she does.  I am officially in awe of her.  Thanks for the opportunity, Lauren!  Visit her at her blog the little things we do... and I promise that you will be impressed by , too.
1.   My favorite daily responsibility is       responding to emails and sending cards.  I love to communicate with people via the written word! The real time communication afforded by email never ceases to please me. I really enjoy remembering the life events of people with a card. I find such pleasure in discovering something hand written in my mail box, and love to give it to others as well  .

2.  My least favorite daily responsibility is,    cleaning. I adore a clean house, and task myself to maintain one, but really dislike the actual work of it. I just don't understand where all of this dust comes from! I literally have to remove it daily     .

3.  My favorite cuisine to eat when going out is    Seafood. I really enjoy the extensive availability of it where I live, and try new preparations often   .

4.  My favorite cuisine to prepare at home is     anything grilled. We have a charcoal grill, and I enjoy challenging myself to learn new grilling techniques, and to create different temperature zones to do an entire meal on the grill.   .

5.  Andy Warhol said that everyone is famous for 15 minutes. My claim to fame is     I find  this theory really interesting, but I don't think it has happened to me. Perhaps at some point in the future, I just hope that it is for something good!

6.  If I could have 3 wishes I would wish       my health, Bob's health, and a lifetime of financial security. Wealth is not necessary, but I would like to not have to worry about the expense of unplanned events   .

7.  My biggest pet peeve is       ...oh gosh...just one? (I left this in from Lauren's answer, because it is just so true!) I have to say it is when someone shows a general disregard for others. I get especially bothered whenever I see someone holding a cell phone to their ear when driving, now that it is illegal in all areas of Metro DC. Wireless earpieces are affordable and easy to use, people!

Seven Random Things

One of my first reads here in blog land, not to mention one of my favorites, is Nichole at I Was Only Stitching.  Isn't that a great blog title?

She passed along The Versatile Blogger tag to me; such fun!  I must list seven random facts about myself, and then pass it along to two other bloggers to do the same.  So here we go:

1.  I can't sing, but I love to.  So I do it, at home, loudly and often.  Very few people have heard me sing, only my nearest and dearest.  If you ask them they will tell you how lucky you are that you have never heard me sing. Really, really lucky.

2.  I used to be afraid of dogs.  Big ones, little ones; they all terrified me.  One day my fear just went away.

3.  I hate socks.  HATE.  I only wear them when wearing sneakers, and take them off as soon as I can.

4.  I am terrified of needles.  I will literally almost pass out when I have to get blood work or a shot.

5.  I am also scared of all bugs, and my little sister had to remove them from my space when we were growing up.  Now I remove them from my Misters space.  Yes, I love him that much.

6.  I wish that I lived in an age when women did everything in dresses.  Dresses are awesome!

7.   Do you find it odd that I only participate in the sports (tennis, golf and running) that it is acceptable for a woman to wear a skirt in?

I am tagging Alyssa of Just Putting It Out There, and Cassidy of 9/10, an almost perfect blog.

Alyssa was also one of my first reads, and although her new job keeps her from posting very often, I always enjoy it when she does.

Cassidy was my scrap swap buddy (see previous post), and I enjoy reading her posts as well.  I also hope that she decides to post more often!

Thanks for reading friends, and happy blogging!

xoxo, a.

Scrap Swap Love

I recently participated in my first scrap swap, and I am officially hooked!  Being a new blogger and committed to making it a fulfilling and rewarding experience for both myself and my readers, I am willing to try (almost!) anything and participate in many of the fun opportunities that abound here in the crafty blog world.  Sweet Tara, who blogs at sewtara organized this one, and teamed me with equally sweet Cassidy, blogger at 9/10, an almost perfect blog.

I put together this package for Cassidy.  Those of you who are familiar with my work will recognize many of these fabric pieces.

Not having done this before, I felt like I was sending little pieces of my soul into the world!

But it was so worth it!  Because a few days later, I received this lovely assortment in the mail:

Notice the lovely coffee cup hugger in the center?  It's my new favorite way to live green, by not taking those cardboard sleeves at the coffee counter.  Seriously in love!

And so many crafty plans are floating around in my head thanks to this package of loveliness.

Thanks so much for reading!  I am off to scout for a new scrap swap.

Happy crafting!

Talents ~ Having Them and Using Them

'Wild Olive' is one of my favorite blogs, and I am thrilled to be a sponsor as well.  This blog is the creation of Mollie, a talented artist and all around lovely person. She shares a story with her readers at the beginning of every month and then features the theme in several of her posts.  April's story comes from the Bible; Matthew 25: 14-30.  In it the word 'talent' refers to currency, and the story tells of how it was either multiplied or squandered.  Mollie paraphrased the story beautifully, and you can read what she wrote here.

She asked her sponsors to write a short piece about a talent we have that we are not using to it's full potential.  It has to be said that I feel a bit humbled to be a part of a group of such gifted women! Below is the picture that I sent her to use with my musing.

Click here to read about all of them; I promise you will be as impressed as I am!

Challenge 365 ~ Week One

Since starting this blog, my biggest challenge has been in taking, editing and posting decent photographs.  I have made some progress, but I still have a long way to go.  With this in mind, I decided to undertake 'Challenge 365'; one photo a day every day for a year that captures a bit of my life.  I've started a set on my Flickr page to catalog them, and have managed to post one every day this week. Only 51 more to go!

Day One ~ Tuesday, April 5 ~ Outside my front door.

Day Two ~ Wednesday, April 6 ~ My beloved family saying good morning.

Day Three ~ Thursday, April 7 ~ Pretty fashion dolls holding court in the living room while they wait for me to finish their new home in my sewing/craft room.

Day Four ~ Friday, April 8 ~ Dawson hanging on the golf green while mama works.

Day Five ~ Saturday, April 9 ~ Lee Rit and Bob at Blues Alley Jazz and Supper Club in Georgetown.  Sad that it came out this way!  When you are standing in line to get an autograph and a picture with someone famous you only get one chance to get it right, and this one was an epic fail.  But the project is meant to capture the day, and this photo does.  It's all part of the learning process; at least that's what I am telling myself!

Day Six ~ Sunday, April 10 ~ Princess Phoebe on the foot of the bed as Bob and I spend the morning on our laptops and watching TV.

Day Seven ~ Monday, April 11 ~ This little guy has been hanging out in the trees that run alongside our property. It is such a pleasure to see this flash of color among the not yet bloomed branches!

Are you in the midst of a 365 photo project?  Or perhaps you have completed one already?  What are your thoughts about them?  I would love to hear!

Happy photographing!
